Aishwarya Rai Bachchan portrayed the role of Nandini in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s award-winning film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

When Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam released in 1999, there were rarely any Nandinis around. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini illuminated the big screen not just with her fabulous lehengas, but also her shining face, effervescent giggle and headstrong ways.

Nandini resonated with the dreams and desires of several girls. But what was it exactly about her that grabbed attention?

Nandini makes an entry to the tunes of “Manmohini”. She plays the local game of “pitthu” and wins it with her accurate target, hinting at what we were about to see in the film. Yes, her eyes (and aim) are sharp, piercing and deep, exactly what she later explains to Sameer (Salman Khan) while arranging the candle chandelier. Her first appearance in the film left hearts beating. A female character this fiery was a rarity.

Despite knowing her limitations, Nandini dared to dream, to love and yet abide by her parent’s command. Nandini’s ways might come across as outlandish, but she was a ticking bomb ready to explode out of her family’s (and societal) boundaries. When her mother inquires about her bonding with Sameer, she honestly and unabashedly reveals to her about the physical side of their romance. Later, when Nandini realises she can’t give her marriage her all, she stays honest to her dreams and refuses to do things under the veil. She goes on to find her lover, even if it meant having her husband by her side.

Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Sameer (Salman Khan) are still one of the most loved on-screen couples.

Nandini’s transition from a naive girl whose entire world was inside her palatial haveli to a mature woman is impressive. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and cinematographer Anil Mehta explored every angle of Aishwarya to perfection, highlighting her best features. No wonder, many still say the actor has never looked this beautiful onscreen.

The year 1999 was a mixed bag. While on one hand we had releases like Biwi No 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi and Sarfarosh where female stars only needed to romance the heroes, on the other hand, we had Kaun, Sangharsh, Shool and Godmother. Bollywood was definitely in a transition phase, and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam easily finds place in the latter group that had strong female leads who had a lot more to do.

The highest point of Aishwarya Rai’s character came when she tries to judge her decision of choosing between Sameer and Vanraj (Ajay Devgn). This as her husband is patiently taking her to finally meet the love of her life. From draping a red saree to putting on the bindi and mangalsutra, the entire sequence of her getting ready is symbolic of giving her marriage one last chance. As the title track plays in the background, her travel to the concert hall was the most difficult journey and one can feel her mental state here. The conflict between her heart and mind is evident from her hesitance towards every step she takes, which is one closer to Sameer, and one farther from Vanraj.

Nandini cemented not just Aishwarya’s career, but also made Bhansali an A-list director in Bollywood. It isn’t wrong to say that nobody knows how to make Aishwarya look this beautiful, strong and endearing on the silver screen like Bhansali.

Into this carefree life enters Sameer (Salman Khan), a boy of Indo-Italian parentage who wants to learn Indian classical music from Pandit Darbar. Sameer stays with the Darbar family, and Nandini is asked to vacate her room to give the guest the nicest room in the manor. Nandini takes a dislike to Sameer, and the two keep playing pranks on each other, but soon realise they are in love. Their love blossoms in the Darbar household around weddings, festivals and family get-togethers.

One day the pair are caught rehearsing their wedding vows and dreaming of their future together by Pandit Darbar, who becomes furious with them. He has already planned Nandini’s wedding. Sameer is kicked out of the house and asked never to contact Nandini again. Sameer does not leave India immediately. He stays in town and writes letters to Nandini asking her to join him, but his letters do not reach her in time.

Nandini’s parents have arranged to get her married to Vanraj (Ajay Devgan) — who had fallen in love with Nandini during her cousin’s wedding. On the wedding night, Vanraj realises that Nandini is not herself and tries to ask her why she is not responding to his love. He asks her for the truth, promising he will help her no matter what. Nandini stays quiet but is later caught reading Sameer’s letters. Vanraj is very angry at first as all he had asked was the truth from her.

When he realises that his wife is in love with another man, he shows the ultimate love by taking Nandini to Italy and help her search for Sameer, to the initial dislike–but eventual approval–of his own parents.

Nandini and Vanraj arrive in Italy and start searching for Sameer but always come up against dead ends. During their search, they face many problems and dilemmas and slowly Nandini gets to see what Vanraj really is like. She sees Vanraj selflessly devoting himself to caring for her during her stay in hospital after an incident.

Eventually they get news about Sameer through his mother (played by Helen), and Vanraj arranges for Nandini to meet Sameer on the night of his debut concert. His job done, Vanraj says goodbye to Nandini and walks away. Nandini and Sameer meet, but the matured Nandini’s feelings for him have changed. She reflects on the unwavering love and devotion that Vanraj showed her throughout their whole relationship, and realises that Vanraj was her true soul mate. She leaves Sameer and catches up with Vanraj.

Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan Hindi Lyrics & English Translation

Aankhon ki gustaakhiyaan maaf hon…
May the impertinence of my eyes be forgiven…

ek tuk tumhein dekhti hain
They look at you just a little;

jo baat kahana chaahe zubaan tum se yeh vo kahati hain
and what my tongue longs to speak, that is what they tell you.

aankhon ki sharmo haya maaf hon
May the bashfulness of my eyes be forgiven.

tumhein dekhke jhukti hain
My eyes fall away from yours;

uthi aankhein jo baat na kah saki jhuki aankhein voh kahti hain
what my eyes couldn’t say while looking into yours, that lowered gaze says for me.

aankhon ki gustaakhiyaan maaf hon
May the impertinence of my eyes be forgiven…

kaajal ka ek til tumhaare labon pe laga duun
I’ll plant a speck of kohl on your lips.

haan chanda aur suuraj ki nazaron se tumko bacha luun
Yes, I’ll spare you the invasive inspection of the sun and the moon.

palkon ki chilman mein aao main tumko chhupa luun
Step behind the fringe of my eyelashes; I’ll hide you there.

khayaalon ki ye shokhiyaan maaf hon
May these mischievous thoughts be forgiven.

har dam tumhein sochti hain jab hosh mein hota hai jahaan
With every breath (my eyes) think of you, and though the whole world is in its senses,

madhosh ye karti hain
(your eyes) rob me of mine.

aankhon ki sharmo haya maaf hon
May the bashfulness of my eyes be forgiven.
